3.9 V6 w/auto, want to convert to manual

Howdy.
I have a 1989 Dakota with a 3.9l V6 and an automatic. I really like this truck, but I wish it were a standard. I've found several manual transmissions for sale, but they all say they are for the 4cyl. Do they use the same transmission? Or if not, can someone give me a part number for the tranny I need. Also, if anyone knows where a good place to find one is, or has one for sale, along with the pedals & linkages & whatnot that I'd need, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks,
Ed

best thing to do is to go to a junkyard, find a manual, and get everything off of it you need. i dont think the v6 and 4cyl shared a trans, but i may be wrong.

Hello Ed, welcome to the forum! Your 89' had it been a standard would have come with the Aisin A535 5-Speed. If I were you I would avoid this transmission because it is known to be weak.

I have a '94 3.9 5-Speed and mine has the Aisin AX-15 which is a little better than the A535 but still a weaker transmission. If your planning on keeping the 3.9 you will probably be better off upgrading to an AX-15 or even better a NV3500. I think your 3.9 is a pre-magnum (LA) based block. So hopefully someone will chime in who knows which tranny would be best to bolt up to your block. If your planning on a V8 swap then I would at least upgrade to a NV3500.

As Kotajones said your best bet will be to find a 5-Speed Dakota and pull all of the parts you'll need from it like the pedals, etc. Where are you located? There's a nice 3.9/5-Speed Dakota that's being parted out pretty close to me that would be perfect for what your wanting to do. I know there's a few folks on here that have actually done the auto/5-Speed swap so hopefully they'll be able to break down a parts list for you.

That answers several questions for me as well. I'd love to convert my truck to a manual at some point, but I wasn't sure which manual transmission would work with my V6 magnum. My truck is a 94 as well.

94XCab,
Thanks for the #'s. I'm located in Washington, D.C. right now, but home is northern Ohio. If you're near either place, let me know. I'd be interested in buying some parts from the donor truck you mentioned.

I'm in Petersburg VA but the parts truck is in Norfolk. It's a couple hours from DC. I'm thinking about going down there this weekend to pull a door and front fender from it. Shoot me a pm if your interested I'll give you some details on it.

What sort of part list will be needed for this type of work? Are there precut holes from the factory that are plugged where the manual will fit? Or do you have to do some cutting?

A manual tranny with an automatic computer won't cause any problems?
