4.7 problems

I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 2 wheel drive with the 4.7. In the past week it started to blow white smoke out the tail pipe. We checked the oil and rad fluid - both levels are fine. We have no leaks anywhere from the motor. just today i replaced all the spark plugs and pcv valve. now the motor is running really rough, still blowing white smoke and has no power whats-o-ever. does anyone know what's wrong with my truck?

white smoke usually means your burning coolant... or running really lean, it's hard to run that lean on new engines cause as soon as the PCM thinks it might be lean it fattens the mix up to prevent damage.

No CEL?

I would closely watch your coolant level

the codes it's thowing are P0456, P0440, P0300, P0301 and P0306. The first two I know are evap (and I know that it's the gas cap and a line that's cracked), and latter three I now are likely due to spark plugs. I changed them and now it runs even worse than before..they are gapped to the spec that the truck calls for.

as for the coolant, I have been keping an eye on it and it has not dropped.

New yesterday, it started overheating but the coolant level (as far as I could tell) was still normal.

any ideas???

Your motor isn't screwed clam down

yes the first 2 are for evap


P0300 is multiple cylinder missfire
P0301 is missfire on #1
P306 is missfire on #6

A missfire doesn't automatically mean the plugs, but since you already changed the plugs you know for sure.

If the only missfires are on #1 and #6 I would swap those 2 coil packs with 2 other cylinders and see if the codes follow it. If it does then it's those coils, if it stays on #1 and #6 check the wires for each.

K well I just checked the plugs for the #1 and #6 cylinder...and they both smell like gas and the one is black. so I swaped them out for new ones.. and i'm going to try it.

if it doesn't work than I will try switching the coil packs.

so just changed out the #1 and #6 plugs and swapped those two coil packs for different cylinders. ran the key trick again and i'm still thorwing all the same codes. i unhooked the battery, drove it around town and now it just says done.

your gonna have to drive it around for the codes to re-appear it won't just pop up instantly

Alright it's been a while since I posted about my truck. I sort of gave up on it for a while as it was frustrating me so badly. However, my g/f talked me into doing some more with it recently. So I called a few different dealships (other than the ones I had already spoken to); I got two answers 1) the block or heads are screwed 2) the coil packs are the problem. We leaned more towards the coil packs as the motor only has 140 on it and we are not hard one it at all. Plus the rad collant level has not dropped at all. So we changed out the coil packs. We drove it around for a while and did the key trick again. Now we are only throwing a P0306 code (which is missfire on #6). When I replaced the coil packs I also replaced all of the spark plugs and checked the wires (visually) as well. I gapped the spark plugs to the speck on the truck and put everything back together.

The truck was a tiny bit better, but it still has no power, still runs really rough, idles high and had the typical misfire sound from the engine.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what might be wrong with my truck or what other things I could try???????

I don't want to give up on it yet, as it is a mint truck (and the g/f loves it).
