how big of a drop can i go before pinion shims are necessary?

when i had a 5/7 drop...i did not use shims. i never blew out a U joint and drove like that for at least 25K miles

it's not the u-joints you need to worry about, if that's all it was then it wouldn't be a big deal. you need to worry about the rear end if the pinion angle changes.

i really think the pinion will be fine. i have shims on my jeep beacuse i had driveline vibrations.

ive never seen anyone have shims on a lowerd truck...but i could be wrong

yeah it's more of an issue with higher lift kits, but you may get away with it by lowering within normal amounts. if you want to lay it on the ground then that would be a diff story, but of course it's not like it would be driven like that.

this is what my truck was when it was static....no problems what so ever. i drove to cali and back to MD. u should be fine
