broke engine help.

hellow all. my name is chris, have not been on in a while it sucks when you get busy. i need some help with my 98 3.9 V6, tonight i went out driving and was driving like my grandpa and my roommate that was driving ahead of me flagged me down to turn off the road once stopped i began seeing smoke come out from under the hood. so i opened the hood, once the smoke died down i began looking for the problem. there was a ton of coolant all over the top of the engine. So that led me to the conclusion that the coolant hose on top of the engine was leaking. well no sign of leaks until i look at it better tomorrow. It could also be the bypass hose that is connected to the water pump, some people have had some troubles with that. Any assistance on this would be great. i will greatly anwser any questions that you may need to diagnoss the problem further. If this has come up before i would appreciate the guidance to some post that would assists me in solving this problem. i will be searching tommorrow for other posts that could help. again thank you for all the help i will be looking/tearing it down tommorrow after school so i will check back in.

not really much to diagnose..... start the engine and see where it's leaking from.... then fix it

okay cool. just so everyone knows after class i went and started the engine and nothing came out. so i started to tear it down a buddy came and lent me a hand. we both decided it was the by pass hose so we tore it down and sure enough the hose had swelled so i replaced that and the thermostat while i was down. there. you for the advice AmberFireDaK, i guess i was just wondering if there was anything special i needed to know and i really did it was fairly simple. back on the road again.
