Need computer help

I'm having trouble with my computer at home, I can't get it to start up, when I turn it on, it will begin to start like normal (fans kick onetc...), then after about three seconds it'll shut down and begin to start up again and shut down again, it just keeps doing this til I hold in the power button to shut it off. Any thoughts on what might be going on? Its about 2 or three years and is running Windows XP Home.

do you need any of the files? if not, get into the built in recovery mode of XP should be F11 or something close to that. and do a destructive restore.
or d/l ubuntu or any other linux version and burn a live cd. if it loads your OS is missing crucial files. and you just need a new install.

my dads would stay on the loading screen, it fixed his.

Problem is it doesn't even get far enough for the software to kick in, I think its a hardware problem but don't know for sure, it seems to happen before the software even has a chance to kick in. I think I'm gonna try a new power supply and see if that does anything, they are only about $70.

try to see if it will run stable in bios, disconect the HD and see if it will run in bios. If it doesn then you know its the HD. Might be the power supply also, there only like 50 or so for one that is prob better than what ya got now if your computter is like 3 or so years old.

Well I unhooked the hard drive and it seemed to start up, so I figured I'd go back and retest the hard drive so I shut down, and plugged the hard drive back in and turned it on and it actually started up. So thanks for the help guys. I haven't shut it back down cause I'm afraid it'll go back into its glitch but I guess I'll have to eventually

Overheating might be the problem. If that doesn't work, it's probably the motherboard. If you are not able to fix it, you can contact expert at 1-800-986-4764
