i understand that you want it in the engine compartment cuz you want that look of the turbo sitting in the engine bay but for $1000 you wont get that look. even with the turbo sitting in the back of the truck youre looking at 2 grand worth of work. a lot of the work will include tuning the computer and such

the turbo setup i just installed on a 99 ls1 firebird ran just over 3000 with the tune.... you are going to need plumbing hot and cold sides, intercooler? to and from lines for oiling to the turbo, injectors, all new exhaust your wastegate alot of other mis. stuff....

i know a guy who put a turbo on a jetta...baught the ebay "turbo kit" for 1200 bucks thinking he was good to go..he said hes in over 7 grand now...i think your biggest hurdle would be tuning the thing

If you really do your research...you CAN do it for $1k. But, you'd be using lots of used parts. I'm going to be doing a turbo on my dak. I've been able to find all sorts of parts cheap:

intercooler - $40 capable of 500 horse
turbo - $150 capable of 625 horse
BOV - $75
Ext. Waste gate - $65
Rising rate fuel pressure Reg. - $175
Wide Band 02 - $250

By my calculations that comes to $755, excluding the "little stuff".

You can get all the plumbing cheap, just figure out what size pipe and go to your local exhaust shop (gotta be there anyway for exh.). After that google for the silicone hoses that couple the tube and get clamps. The oil line stuff is cheap at AutoZone/Checker...just get it from their bulk. Misc. fittings and stuff just come around too.

By using a rising rate pressure reg you don't need some badass engine management system. Tune with the 02 guage.
