Just bought a used Kenwood CD/Sirius receiver w/Sirius box/antenna on eBay to replace the factory stereo that came with my new Dakota. I also got the 2006 Chrys/Dodge/Jeep install kit, antenna adapter and Kenwood wiring harness.

Is this something I can pull-off myself? I was thinking about taking it down to have it done professionally but I'm thinking I might want to save a buck if it's easy enough.

Anyone know where I can find instructions for the 06 model?

Like Gen 3?

This is the interior of an '05, mine's an '06. Looks about the same except for all of the silver in the center console is gray and doesn't stand out like this one. Does that make it like a gen 3? And if so, where do I look for bolts to take off? My '93 had screws for an allen wrench right in front so it was obvious. But this one, not a screw in sight.

there shouldnt be many if any screws to take off ever since the late 90's they have had clips in the dash and all you have do do is get a tool in there and pop them free and out comes the trim peices then you will see the screws you have to take out to remove the factory sterio then you can install the new one there is some wire work you may have to do. this is an 06 truck we are talking about yes you can do it yourself but my suggestion to you is if you havent ever installed an aftermarket sterio yourself you might want to take it to a shop and let them do it. but i would highly suggest that you talk to the installer and see if you can watch him work so you can see how it is done and learn a trick or two. i know when I had customers request to tag along in my shop i let them but alot of installers dont want you to know how to do it because it takes buisness away from them. it all dependes on the installer and the company he/she works for and their rules

RE: Bass

I'm taking your advice and having a pro' install the stereo. If I messed something up on my new baby... well, I just can't risk that.

On a separate note, is there any way to tell if the noise I'm hearing is due to cheap speakers or vibrations? Whenever I play anything with any deep bass sounds, I hear distortion/vibration type of noise from the stock sound system.

the stock system when you take it out look at the speakers they have a paper cone arround the voice coil in the center of the speeker that cone bends when too much bass is applied to it or the speakes move too fast and thhat is what is causing the distortion you here the vibrations are coming from the fact that the actual body of the speaker is covered with what is equivilent to a treated card board which produces a very hollow vibration sound also it is not made for bass it is made for medium range music at a level equlizer setting this is the reason so many people see the demise of their factory speekers they play music too loud with either alot of bass or alot of trebble ant the speekers cannot handle it.

RE: Installed Professionally.... But

Got my Kenwood stereo installed professionally, looks WAY cool. Its got these knobs that are backlit in blue/purple... looks like neon and cool graphic screen savers. So I got it out of the audio place tonight and setup all of my screens just so, got the Sirius display to show just the fields I want, and the clock and the little graphics bars...

Then I turn the truck off, come back and its forgotten all of my settings. Time has gone back to 12:01.

When I tried turning the ignition to ACC, I get nothing. Everything is dark.

Could it be a messed up install or did I buy a bunk used Kenwood?

sounds like they didn't hookup the wires right, you should take it back there and have them fis it (should be a easy fix, just a couple of wires)

take it back to them and let them know what it is doing the installer either didnt hook up the memory wire or hooked it up to some thing that is only powered when the truck is on all he has to do is hook it up to some thing that is constant powered like the interior lights it is either that or your battery terminals are loose and you arent gettin a good connection to them i am gonna bet on the memory wire though take it back and they should fix it for free

Hey Bro, sounds like the installer either didn't hook up your constant wire..... or you might have blown a fuse... either way, I would take it back to the shop you had it installed at...

i know for the 04 dakota there is either orange or yellow wires that are to be constant hot. one allows you to check the time with car off and the other one is the one that keeps the memory, this is the one you want.
when i got the wiring diagram for the radio it only listed one .
