I wanted dual exhaust on my truck, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it? Would you recommend just using a double outlet muffler or running two separate pipes down from separate headers? I need it to pass Massachusetts inspection so I assume on an 88' I still need cats. Whether I go with a double outlet muffler or dual systems should either of them or both use an "H" pipe between them toward the back? Would this even help improve anything? ~Thanks

i dont want to hurt anybodys feelings but that v6 will not sound good with a high flow exhaust on it, but if u want daul exhaust just to have 2 tailpipes i would run a single inlet daul outlet muffler, and leave everything in front of the muffler stock

The flowmaster sounds like a good idea, however I really want to fab up some sort of a quick disconnect system so I can run cherrybomb glasspacks or something along those lines most of the year and then swap before inspection. Would they sound good on the 3.9??

i would go with the flowmaster,, i run a single inlet single outlet on mine and it sounds as good as a v6 can lol, i also have a catco high flow cat,, the true duals may sound nice but it would be very hard to run and in my opinion you cant beat flowmaster,, if your stck on duals run a single inlet dual outlet,, thats what im considering doing when i replace mine : 0

What is the difference between the Flowmaster 40, Delta and Super?

I would probably go with the dual outlet, it must sound a LITTLE better? Just one pipe would be longer than the other.

I wonder if the aftermarket cat does anything for the sound? None of this at all probably boosts any performance I assume.

the high flow cat does provide a better sound,, but if you are looking for a chhep exhaust to sound good i wouldnt reccomend it,, i got mine cheap from a friend and for the performance,, better flowing exhaust has to help some i cant say how much tho cuz i did my exhaust work and cai at the same time,, i can def feel a difference with the combo,,, but if you do a dual outlet lemme know how it turns out cuz im wanting to get one for mine next, as for the different kinds of flowmasters im sure there is a difference in sounds the 40 seems to be popular its a twin chamber muffler which will work great even without a cat cuz you will still get decent backpressure ( v6s need a lil bp) anyhow lemme know what you decide on

Well how much are we talking the high flow cat run$? I will probably do it if it betters my sound, I assume the cats are what helps with BP so the Flowmasters sound like a great substitute for the high flow cat (make up for). There is a Flowmaster 40, Flowmaster 40 Delta, & Flowmaster 40 Super (they are all Flowmaster 40's) I will give you the best sample of my new sound you can ask for, one of my camcorders records in Digital Dolby 5.1 surround sound with all independent microphones so I will upload a video for everyone, but it won't be for at least a month (got other truck prioritie$)

My plan for subs, personally, is a diamond plate tool box against the back of the cab, in the bed. There is no room for true subs in the cab, this is something I am experienced at. I am however replacing all 4 cab speakers with component systems (cross-overs AND amps) this way I won't need some 12" subs to make a bunch of noise. I will want the extremely deep tones it lags PLUS the feel tones. Two 15s in a tool box (non-ported subs) I will honestly use 18" subs if they fit in the box (and I will probably buy a box around/based on my 18s) it won't matter they are outside the cab because my component systems are doing all that work, the subs will be running at such a low ohm and frequency that all you will be able to do is feel them.

The catco cats I believe are 80-100 bucks, I would simply remove yours with the addition of the flowmaster

You think I will be able to pass Massachusetts inspection with straight pipes from my headers to the muffler? I'm not a hardcore gear head, so I have to ask whether I would be better off with no cat or a "nice aftermarket" cat?

I live in wv, don't know how strict ma is, but another option is taking a pry bar and punching out the insides of your cat... Leave it on just cut the exhaust after the cat, punch out the guts of it, be sure to blow out all of the debri before putting your muffler back on then boom! You gave a homemade high flo cat ; )

I believe my tailpipe diameter is 2.25" is the 5.2L V8 any larger? I was wondering if I should bother upgrading to a full 2.50" or something (performance, sound, etc.) The Flowmaster 40 comes in a 2.25" centered in and 2.25" dual outs, or a 2.50" centered in and 2.25" outs so I am seriously considering upgrading my pipes from the muffler up to 2.50"

Thoughts?

I dont think it sounds to bad

I know its no V8 but i wouldnt say our v6 motors cant sound good with high flow exhaust on them. No feelings hurt though. to each his own.

Couple things... 88... V6.... Performance.

Three things that don't go together.

Second thing, if you go TOO large with piping a few things will happen... especially in a V6. You don't need the extra size when your not flowing more air IN to the engine... Doing more harm then good.. Also the bigger the pipe the 'worse' it will sound. Again your not pushing out enough volume you will get that raspy pinngy sound.

I've got a single 2.25 Hooker in and out, a high flow cat (can't run the headers after the suspension was installed) but it sounds 'decent'. Like the video posted above if your idle, or keeping the rev's fairly low it won't sound all that bad... once you hit higher RPM's there is no getting around that V6 sound.... Its not exactly pleasant.

Here's what it reminds me of.. .ALL the 3.4-3.8 GM car motors... Grand Am's Grand Prix's 3.1 Cavaliers... all sound the same... thats the higher RPM sound your going to get with any exhuast aftermarket or otherwise...

Duals are for looks, and I would do them. Personally I HATE the dual straight out the back look (sooo 80's) unless its through a Cuda roll pan or something like that.... Dual exhuast exiting each side of the box in the factory location, with some nice chrome ends... is about as clean as you can get.
