SHORT VERSION:
RCI FUEL CELLS SUCK! IF YOU NEED A FUEL CELL GET ONE CUSTOM MADE.

LONG VERSION:
After finding yet another fucking leak on my fuel cell, i finally decided to just scrap my current one and start fresh. I have seen countless issues with RCI fuel cells leaking on the net after some searching due to my issue. After the pages of negative feedback about the quality of these tanks i hope no one else makes the same mistake i did by getting a RCI.

These tanks are very prone to leak at the welds due to the mounting tabs breaking, just regular wear and tare, and from vibration. I first thought it was due to how it was mounted. So i fixed this and remounted it. I got a new leak after that and even after i seal it, it just starts a new leak somewhere else.

A local speed shop referred me to this site: http://www.alumiworx.com/cart/index.php

Looking though there work, and the welds and materials are way BETTER than the P.O.S. RCI does. The material is thicker and welds are cleaner. Also there mounts are made stronger and wont break off like ALL RCI tanks do. There price is also comparable to most manufactures Best of all they make custom cells to your specs. I just finished a sketch of the cell that i will be running. I will be contacting them some time this week and will hopefully have there tank by the end of this month.

Sorry for the long post i am just pissed after having so many problems with a "quality" part that reputational companies (like summit, jegs, and most locals) sell. At the very least i hope this post will make those of you thinking about getting a RCI cell think twice before you spend the money.

If all goes well maybe this company can also make some for the other members are looking for. I am sure they could even make a stock replacement cell to use your stock pump and keep the tank in the stock location. Just give more clearance, or even be able to run and external high flow pump for those that want some performance.

Specs and price would be good, I have a few guys that can build me a fuel cell, just wanna know pricing before I decide who I'm going to go with. Other guys I am considering are at www.motionthree.com, they are local to me so that is always a bonus, but I haven't gotten a price from them yet.

Nice find Jay, I think my cell is a summit unit, but I'm going to check this weekend, and if it is an RCI, I will more than likely send it back, and pick up something different.

Jay are they making it a direct bolt on so we can use our stock sending unit and pump? The only thing holding me back is dealing with all the crap with a new pump and unit...

I am not, but any fuel cell can easily adapted to do so. I can go into greater detail if you like. Mounting the fuel cell is harder than adapting it to work with the stock unit. Also i am in the process of designing a way to make it even easier.

I know a easy fix if you have a RCI, just need to find some one that can weld aluminum

I will post up my first draft of my cell.

Sweet, if you know of any other site that can build fuel cells let me know.

On a side note if anyone has a stock tank from a 97-04, let me know. I am looking for a part that will make it easier for those of you wanting to use you stock pump in a aftermarket tank.

Jay, come up and get the one out of the blue truck. Shit, it even has over a half a tank left in it! lol
Sweet, i will either make a weekend out of it or if ya want you can meet me part way. Does it still have the fuel pump? After i get it i can do some tests and if you provide the fuel cell i can make a mount for the stock pump.

Sweet, let me know what weekend you are free. You want to do it next weekend or the weekend after?

Jason, the tank is out of his blue truck. There isn't much that you would be able to use out of it for your QC. If you need something it would probably be easier to list what your looking for than from him to say what or even if there is something left. Glad you found the thread BTW.

yup, did a quick search just to see the info posted here. Props to ya. About how much is that custom tank going to cost you anyways? 250-300?

Jason, as Jay said, let me know what your looking for. I have alot of parts laying around, some not even on the blue truck...

slight update.......

I went to a local speed shop during the weekend to meet a couple of friends and talk. I ended up finding 3 other places that make cells with great feedback locally and online. I emailed a total of 4 places with with a sketch and explanation. Hopefully i will have a response by Friday from all of them. I highly doubt the price will be 300 or under. Most places start the prices at 300 being the cheapest (I have heard some pay just under 1.5K). I just hope mine is around 400.

Based on my specs it will be very close to 21.5 gall. compared to my current 19 gal that isn't allowing me to use the whole 19 gal due to the fuel slosh and not providing enough fuel to the pump during a turn. I am only able to use 13.-14.5 gal max out of it. with the new one i should easily be able to use 20 gal. Here is an attached pic of what i am looking at also........

Rook, i will hit ya up soon man, things have been crazy around my way also. Your moving? Adding 24hr room service to hotel rook?

I'd to add some baffles and make the sump volume larger. I have a stock tank with the factory "baffle" (AKA filter )removed and a Aeromotive external pump. The pick up tube sits on the bottom of the tank. At anything under 1/3 of a tank I get starvation even when acceleration slowly. I think I may put a fabricated tank in the bed gravity feeding a 1/2 gallon reservour under the bed before the pump. That should eliminate any starvation unless I roll the damn thing !

sweet, I will keep that in mind man. I really appreciate it. I will either have internal baffles or just run 2" or so of foam on the bottom. I am actually talking with two of the 4 people i emailed. So far neither one of them do 1/4" they only do 1/8". Hope this shit holds up, although it should. I think it was more of a welding problem then material thickness for the rci. Anyone know how thick the RCI is off hand?

1/4" is way over kill. I worked at a welding shop that made custom boat tanks. They used .100" or .125" . Boats pound the hell out of tanks and baffles. They never had any problems. You'll find that almost all tanks are made the same way. I'd avoid the foam. it breaks down and clogs EFI systems.

sweet, good to know about the foam. What do you think about 1/8" or .080? think that would be good enough or would i need to weld some aluminum angle iron to the corners to help brace the seams from creaking and leaking like the RCI?
